EarthJustice responded to Hochul’s op-ed (Fitting NY’s climate goals to reality), in which she argues that common-sense updates to the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act need to be made, in order to balance the line between protecting the planet while also lowering people’s energy bills.
However, representatives at EarthJustice criticize that she is evading responsibility to fully implement the state’s Climate Law. EarthJustice provides an extensive list of actions Hochul has taken that undermine climate progress, including approving the air permit for the Greenidge cryptomining plant.
They also challenge several of Hochul’s claims and point to examples from other states and countries that have successfully advanced clean energy, even under Trump.
Finally, they highlight three actions Hochul could take now to lower costs for New Yorkers and reduce greenhouse gas emissions:
- Accelerate renewable generation
- Increase the electrification of vehicles and buildings
- Make clean energy transmission a top priority
