Seneca Lake Guardian (SLG) is a small grassroots group dedicated to preserving and protecting the health of the Finger Lakes Region, its residents and visitors, rural community character, and agricultural and tourist-related businesses that depend on the lake for their livelihoods. Their advocacy includes public education, citizen participation, engagement with decision makers, and networking with like-minded organizations.
SLG was founded by Yvonne Taylor and Joseph Campbell, the leaders behind Gas Free Seneca, along with Mary Anne Kowalski, a Seneca Lake Pure Waters Board member. Originally, they became environmental advocates during the anti-fracking movement and expanded their efforts to address the numerous threats facing Seneca Lake and the broader region.
Despite a small team, they have been successful at working with notable groups, like Earth Justice, to prevent environmental injustices, such as proposals for a gas storage and transport hub and a garbage incinerator facility. What makes SLG unique is that they are able to advocate and fight against threats that go beyond single issues.
Recently, Taylor received a prominent environmental award in being named to Grist’s List of National Climate Leaders, highlighting her leadership in launching the National Coalition Against Cryptomining to help states fight the development of data centers in their local communities, which can consume an exorbitant amount of electricity and gallons of water to operate.
Seneca Lake Guardian continues their environmental battles, including the proposed AI data center on Cayuga Lake, Greenidge Bitcoin Mining on Seneca Lake, and the expansion of the Seneca Meadows landfill. Through these efforts, they continue their mission to promote sustainable energy and challenge destructive and reckless development that jeopardizes the Finger Lakes Region.
