As demand for both data centers and energy rises, concerns are growing in Pennsylvania about the strain on the power grid. President Trump recently promoted major energy and tech investments in the state, which will need substantial electricity to support planned data centers. The International Energy Agency predicts global data center electricity use will double by 2030, surpassing Japan’s current consumption. In response to concerns about rising consumer energy costs, State Sen. Katie Muth plans to introduce the Pennsylvania Ratepayer Protection Act. The bill would create a separate utility rate class for high-load data centers, requiring them to pay for infrastructure costs instead of shifting the burden to everyday residents.
