The Seneca County Board of Supervisors will discuss recognizing the Rights of Water and the Rights of Nature at its upcoming meeting on June 10 at 6 pm.
The Rights of Nature movement is a growing global effort to grant ecosystems and natural entities the legal standing typically reserved for individuals or corporations. For Seneca County, a historically conservative region, even discussing such a topic is an important opportunity.
The topic was formally added under Communications on the June 10, 2025 agenda, and asks:
What if bodies of water were guaranteed legal rights that criminalize their destruction? What if local communities had the authority to pass laws banning pollution, extraction, and waste-dumping?
Environmental advocates are calling on community members, especially Seneca County residents who believe in protecting natural resources, to attend the June 10 meeting.
