Yvonne Taylor, Co-Founder and Vice President of Seneca Lake Guardian, was featured in an article discussing the impact of the upcoming presidential election on cryptocurrency mining in New York. The election could shape the future of a fossil fuel-powered plant in the Finger Lakes region that is currently used to power Bitcoin mining servers.
For years, Taylor and other advocates have fought to shut down the Greenidge facility and other energy-intensive crypto mining operations, with mixed success. In the absence of strong state regulations, environmental groups are now looking to the federal government to step in and limit crypto mining.
“We came to the Capitol to make sure our congressional leaders hear the people’s voice as this industry spreads across the country like a cancer,” Taylor stated.
As the election approaches, the future of New York’s crypto mining policies, and its broader climate goals, remains uncertain. Advocates argue that federal regulation is needed to curb fossil fuel-based Bitcoin mining, as state-level restrictions have been difficult to enforce. However, with both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris courting support from the cryptocurrency industry—which has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the 2024 presidential and congressional campaigns—a federal crackdown on the industry seems increasingly unlikely.
