Governor Kathy Hochul releases a final interagency extreme heat action plan. Due to increased dangerous heat exposure to a plethora of communities, there has been a need to address and provide safety for New Yorkers who are exposed to this changing climate. The Department of Environmental Conservation and New York State Energy Research and Authority have led this action plan to mitigate the effects of dangerous heat on disadvantaged and high-priority communities. These communities include people with pre-existing conditions, older adults, outdoor workers, and low-income residents of color. The plan is devised of a four-tiered action system. The first action block is adaptation planning and implementation, then preparedness, communication and workers’ safety, building infrastructure, and lastly continuing an ecosystem-based adaptation. The DEC and NYSERDA along with other state agencies including the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and the State Department of Health are hosting two webinars to answer questions and provide further context of the Extreme Heat Action Plan.
