In his new Water Front blog post, journalist Peter Mantius dives into question of why lung cancer rates are so high in the area surrounding Seneca Meadows, New York’s largest landfill. Seneca Meadows holds garbage from all over New York, New England, and Canada, and the surrounding area had 50% more cases of lung cancer than expected from the years of 2011-2015. While it is disputed if Seneca Meadows is the cause of this increase of cases, there is certainly evidence to suggest that negative environmental factors have an impact on people developing cancer. To read more about the impact Seneca Meadows and general waste is having on the health of those in the Finger Lakes region, read Mantius’s post here.
