A recent New York Times article presents a new and scary look at the problem of noise and the health problems it can cause, even in more rural or suburban areas. The article states that noise “…is a largely unrecognized health threat that is increasing the risk of hypertension, stroke and heart attacks worldwide, including for more than 100 million Americans”. The topic of noise is extremely relevant to the Finger Lakes region due to the high noise levels of bitcoin mining rigs at sites such as Greenidge on Seneca Lake. Noise can travel through water, making this a potential problem for people all over the region.
